The Companions of the Cross staff were called in very early one morning for a major announcement. What could it be? Their minds raced as they awaited the big news. Finally, the word came—our faithful leader for the last 10 years, Fr. Scott McCaig, had been called by Pope Francis to the episcopate. He would soon become Bishop of the Roman Catholic Military Ordinariate of Canada! (This is a diocese of massive dimensions: spreading across Canada and around the world—wherever Canadian Armed Forces personnel are deployed.)

The excitement was tangible as we joyfully shared the news with our spiritual family, friends, and supporters. Congratulations began pouring in. In the midst of all this excitement, the news began to sink in. What would this mean for the Community? It became clear that a new leader would need to be elected a full 2 years earlier than planned. Our annual brothers’ retreat would now become a ‘General Assembly’ to discuss the future of our Community and elect a new leader and executive council. As our beloved founder, Fr. Bob Bedard, liked to say,

“Our God is a God of Surprises!”
